Cochlear Implant is a boon for young children who have severe to profound deafness in both ears since birth. Because of hearing impairment, they are not able to speak. Cochlear Implant provides normal hearing to such children in one ear and with post surgical rehabilitation they are able to speak also. Cochlear Implants are costly and were not affordable by all. Keeping in mind “Sabka Sath Sabka Vikas”, the DEPwD, Ministry of SJ&E is providing benefit of this modern technology to poor children also. It is in this direction, the Ministry has introduced Cochlear Implant programme under revised Scheme of Assistance to Disabled Persons for Purchase/Fitting of Aids and Appliances (ADIP) for the poor and needy young children.
Cochlear Implant and its benefits
A Cochlear Implant is an electronic device that replaces the diseased inner ear and carries the sound and speech to the auditory nerve and thus to the brain, where we understand the speech and recognize the sounds. This is now considered as the treatment of choice for patients who are severe to profoundly deaf due to damage to the hair cells of cochlea.
Cochlear implant helps you to hear better than the best hearing aid even in noisy environments. Patients can enjoy music after implant and hear and talk on the phone, and even use their implant processors while swimming. They can feel safer and hear the alarms and the sound of the vehicles.
Cochlear Implant helps to bring a congenitally deaf child to hear the world of hearing and speech.
What Is a Cochlear Implant?
The implant provides a synthetic ear which connects a speech processor attached to the outside of the head to an electrode which stimulates the auditory nerve inside the ear. The individual parts include:
1) Microphone: Picks up noises and sounds from outside Speech Processor: Arranges the sounds from the microphone
2) Transmitter: Converts the sounds to electric impulses Electrode Array: Takes the electric impulses and sends them to the auditory nerve
How Does This Implant Work?
Children who have never heard before will have a very different experience adjusting to the implant since these signals are the first type of hearing they have ever experienced. Typically, a child will receive the implant between two and six years old. The surgery is followed by intense therapy, which may allow them to acquire the speech and language skills they need to communicate with others.
As cochlear implants continue to improve, doctors at hearing center locations around the world are studying the results. There are many possibilities for the future. These devices may be able to correct a wider array of problems, and may provide even clearer hearing for those who use them.
It’s a blessing for people of our region that Adesh Institute of Medical Sciences and Research is now empanelled under this scheme (ADIP Scheme). Children less than 5 years of age who cannot speak or hear since birth will get operated for Cochlear Implant under this scheme free of cost.
